Abstract
This research aims to describe the implementation of teaching writing using genre-based approach at SMP Al-Azhar 21 Solo Baru. This study focuses on describing the stages of teaching writing using genre-based approach, describe the activities in each stage, describing the procedure of teaching writing using genre-based approach, and describing the problem faced by teacher in teaching writing using genre-based approach. The type of this research is a naturalistic study. The data of this research are the fieldnote, the interview script, the lesson plan, and the students’ writing product. The data sources are informants, the event, and the documents. The techniques for analyzing the data were organizing, summarizing and interpreting. In organizing, all of the data were written down in readable form and then the data were categorized. In summarizing, all of data were merged into pattern by finding the connection among the categories. In interpreting, the researcher told the important finding and what could be learned from it. The results of the research show that, firstly, teacher uses four stages in teaching writing using genre-based approach namely BKOF, MOT, JCT, and ICT. Each stage has different function and relates to each other. Secondly, each stage has two kinds of activities, BKOF has question-response and direct explanation, MOT has written and oral text, JCT has discussing the text and group observation, and ICT has assignment in the school and assignment as homework. The third, in classroom procedure, teacher uses the same procedure as same as the theory but teacher also gives addition and modification. They are three modifications in classroom procedure, BKOF-MOT-JCT-ICT, MOT- JCT-BKOF- ICT, BKOF- MOT-ICT. And the fourth, the teacher faces four problems in teaching English. They are unstable motivation of students, the characteristic of students, the classroom management, and the different capability of students as the big problem.
