Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the types of intonation in “The Lion King” movie manuscript and the functions of intonation used in “The Lion King” movie manuscript. To describe the types, the writer uses intonation theory, while to describe function, the writer uses discourse analysis in function of intonation theory. The type of this research is qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer uses observation and documentation method by selecting the utterances which can be found in “The Lion King” movie manuscript, taken from Working Draft of, August 20, 1993 written by Irene Mecchi and Jonathan Roberts. The study shows that there are twenty types and for functions of intonation in “The Lion King” manuscript movie. The types are mostly in the fall tone which takes 60% of the data. The types are type(1.) 1-3-2-2, type(2.) 2-2-3-1, type(3.) 1-3-2-2-3-1, type(4.) 2-3-1, type(5.) 2-2-2-3-2-2-1, type(6.) 3-2-2-2-2-2-2-1, type(7.) 1-3-2, type(8.) 2-2-1, type(9.) 1-2-1-2-1, type(10.) 3-2-2-3-2-2- 2-3-1, type(11.) 1-2-3-1, type(12.) 2-2-3-1(13.) 2-2-3-3-2-2-2-3, type(14.) 2-2-2-3, type(15.) 1-2-2-2-2-3, type(16.) 2-, type(17.) 1-2-2-3, type(18.) 1-3-2, type(19.) 1-1-1-2-3, and type(20.) 1-2-3. The functions are mostly attitudinal function to show power which takes 75% of the data. It indicates that “The Lion King” has a full express emotion and attitudes as they speak and this odds a special kind of “meaning” to spoken language.
