Abstract
The research studies learning strategies used by the three students: Anisa, Riris, and Aris in mastering English specially for reading skill. The type of the research is a case study which aims to describe the students learning strategies in mastering reading skill. The methods of collecting the data is interview, observation, and document. The data are taken from the subject of the research in the form of field notes, interview, and document. The result of the research shows that the three students use three kinds of learning strategies based on O’Malley and Chamot; metacognitive, cognitive, and social/affective. The first subject is Anisa. She uses the learning strategies based on O’Malley and Chamot: metacognitive, cognitive, and social/affective, metacognitive: advance organizer, directive attention, functional planning, selective attention, self-management, and self-evaluation, cognitive: resourcing, repetition, imagery, keyword method, note taking, summarizing, recombination, elaboration, and inferancing, social/affective: question and cooperation. The second subject is Riris. She uses the learning strategies based on O’Malley and Chamot: metacognitive, cognitive, and social/affective, metacognitive: directive attention, functional planning, self-evaluation, and self-management, cognitive: repetition, resourcing, keyword method, note taking, and summarizing, social/affective: question and cooperation. The third subject is Aris. He uses learning strategies based on O’Malley and Chamot: metacognitive, cognitive, and social/affective, metacognitive: directive attention and functional planning, cognitive: resourcing and keyword method, social/affective: question and cooperation. All of them have different action and attention in their learning activity. Most of learning strategies employed by the three subject of the research are full consciousness. As junior high school students, they like applying these strategies in which on that occasion and awareness in learning reading. Thus, the writer can conclude that three kinds of strategies; metacognitive, cognitive, and social/affective help the students mastering reading skill.
