Abstract

This research aims to determine the most frequent vowel shifts made by the students and also describe the reason of the shift vowel sounds by the students. In collecting the data, the writer applies direct observation. The first step of collecting data is that the writer asks the students to produce their sounds by reading the text and then records the students’ sounds in producing English. The writer uses tape recorder and cassette to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the writer classified and identified them based on the theory of the description of the speech sounds by Wolfram, and transcribes the data into phonetic details transcription. The result of the data analysis shows that the students’ produced 215 or 99.94% from 600 data shift in vowel sound. From each vowel shift, there are 26 or 12.09% shift produced in vowel [i:] shift to [ɪ], [e], [ɛ]; there are 7 or 3.25% shift produced in vowel [ɪ] shift to [i:], [ɛ]; 39 or 18.13% shift produced in vowel [e] shift to [ɛ], [æ], [eɪ], [ɪ], [Λ], [aɪ], [ɛɪ]; 44 or 20.46% shift produced in vowel [ɛ] shift to [ɪ], [e], [æ], [ɛə], [ɛa], [ɛɪ], [Λ], [aɪ], [eɪ]; 18 or 8.37% shift produced in vowel [æ] shift to [e], [ɛ], [Λ]; 21 or 9.76% shift produced in vowel [Λ] shift to [ɔ], [ɔ:], [ə], [e], [ɛ], [u:], [ʊ]; 3 or 1.39% shift produced in vowel [ə] shift to [a], [Λ]; 13 or 6.04% shift produced in vowel [a:] shift to [au], [a], [ə]; 9 or 4.18% shift produced in vowel [a] shift to [a:]; 14 or 6.51% shift produced in vowel [ʊ] shift to [u:], [ɔ:], [Λ]; 21 or 9.76% shift produced in vowel [u:] shift to [ɔ], [o], [ə], [Λ], [ʊ]. The shift English vowel from each student’s happen because slip of the tongue or influenced by their region, mother tongue. The other reason of the shift is they use their own English knowledge, that is not enough yet to pronounce the English word well.
