Abstract
This study has two objectives. 1) Describe the type of compound words contained in the text of the news work of students of class VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. 2) Describe the meaning of compound words that contain text news of students of class VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method is a method that refers to speech or words not numbers. The result of this research is kind of compound word and the meaning of compound word in the text of the news of VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta in the academic year 2016/2017. There are 3 types of compound words contained in the news text. 1) based on its nature is divided into two that is endocentric and ecocentric. Based on data found more compound words are endocentric rather than ecocentric. 2) A compound word based on a natural meaning. 3) A compound word based on a composite arrangement and a sequential arrangement. Based on data found more compound words that have a composite arrangement rather than a sequential arrangement. In addition, this study also analyzed the meaning of compound words contained in the text of the work of students of class VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. There are three meanings of compound words, 1) compound verb meaningful words, 2) compound words meaning nouns, 3) compound words meaningful adjectives.
