Abstract

Self-disclosure is the process of disclosing one's personal information to others. Gay often deal with the tension between disclosing and concealing their sexual orientations in relation male friendship. This study aims to find out about the boundaries of criteria that gay considerations in self-disclosure. Furthermore, information on strategies used in the disclosure or conceal their sexual identity. This article presents the results of a qualitative interview study with 3 gays about their choices to disclose or conceal their sexual identities. Using Communication Privacy Management (CPM) as a theoretical framework, interview transcripts were thematically analyzed for privacy rule criteria and disclosure or concealment strategies. This study contributes to previous understanding of CPM by magnifying three strategies for disclosing or concealing sexual identity. This research uses qualitative content analysis. The gay decision to reveal or conceal their sexual identity is characterized by the complexity of personal rules (criteria): cultural, gender, risk-benefit and motivation. Through the complexity of such personal rules produce disclosure or concealment strategies. They use selection, reciprocity, and ambiguity strategies.
