Abstract
Self-disclosure is the process of disclosing one's personal information to others. In the process of self-disclosure, gay experience the complexities of to open or being about sexual identity. The family is the closest part of a gay’s life. Different mindsets in the family makes gays troubling to decide between revealing or concealing their sexual identity. This study aims to find out about the boundaries of criteria that gay considerations in self-disclosure. Furthermore, information on strategies used in the disclosure or conceal their sexual identity. This research uses qualitative content analysis. Data collection methods used were interviews, with number of informant 4 gay men domiciled in Surakarta and live with family. The results of this study show the criteria and strategies used by gays to reveal or conceal their sexual identity. Criteria include culture, gender, risks and benefits, and motivation. The strategies used include selection, reciprocity, ambiguity and deflection. The criteria and strategies used differently by gays are depend by the gay relationship with each family member.
