Abstract
This research aims at describing the constraints in language teaching and learning in comprehending English text materials of the first year students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Pekalongan in 2007/2008 academic year. A qualitative research is done to describe those constraints. The subject of the research is all students of the first year, librarian, and an English teacher for the first year and the headmaster. The object is the constraints in comprehending reading text materials. The researcher uses three techniques to collect the data, i.e., doing observation, distributing questionnaire, and doing interview. The data in this research are analyzed by applying descriptive qualitative method. The result of the research shows that the students have constraints in comprehending English text materials. There are some factors that cause the constraints. The first is related to the constraints of language teaching learning focusing on the facility, the teacher’s factor, the students’ factor, the material and time and space. The second is related to the constraints of English component, focusing on vocabulary, structure and pronunciation.
