Abstract
Background: Type 2 DM is a metabolic disease in which there are any increases of blood sugar due to the decrease of insulin secretion by beta cells in the pancreas or insulin function defect (insulin resistance). The high glucose levels in the blood for some periods may cause a number of health problems such as complications of microvascular and macrovascular diseases till death. It may also cause any risks of other health problems, for instance, cognitive function defect, muscle weakness, disturbance of balance, and increasing the risks of falls in diabetics. The longer someone suffers from diabetes mellitus, the more possible he or she catchs various complicatons and health problems so that the risk of falls of the diabetics increase. Purpose: To figure out the correlation between the duration of suffering from diabetes and the risk of falls in type 2 DM patients. Method: this study uses an observation research with cross sectional method. By using quota sampling technique, it obtains 80 people as the sample for this research. Berg Balance scales is used to measure the risks of falls. Diabetes status data is strengthened by the secondary data from the respondent medical record in Grha Diabetika Clinic Surakarta. Statistical trial uses correlation test Pearson Product Moment. Result: From a total of 80 people, 48 people (60%) have lower risk of falls, 26 people (32,5%) have medium risk of falls, and 6 people (7,5%) have higher risk of falls. The result value after doing correlation test Pearson Product Moment was p=0,0001. It indicates that there is a correlation between the duration of suffering from diabetes and the risk of falls with correlation coefficient (r) was -0,593 which shows there is a medium correlation between variables. Conclusion: There is a correlation between the duration of suffering from diabetes and the risk of falls in type 2 DM patients.
