Abstract

This research is aimed: to identify the kinds of error made by the learners in the use of preposition and to know the dominant error made by the learners. The writer uses a descriptive qualitative research as the type of research. It was conducted in September 2007. The subject of the study is the second year students of SMP 9 Pekalongan in academic year 2006/2007. The cluster sampling is used to get one class consisting of 28 students out of four classes as the sample. The data analysis was started by collecting the data, identifying errors, and then counting the error percentage to find out the frequency of errors. Twenty items of multiple choice tests in 35 minutes were used as the instrument in collecting the data. From the result of the research it is found that there are 355 errors made by the students in using preposition. Those errors are analyzed based on the surface strategy taxonomy, namely misformation of preposition “at” (7.60%), misformation of preposition “around” (7.32%), misformation of preposition “behind” (7.04%), misformation of preposition “among” (7.04%), misformation of preposition “between” (7.04%), misformation of preposition “near” (7.04%), misformation of preposition “with” (7.04%), %), misformation of preposition “above” (6.76%), misformation of preposition “across” (6.76%), misformation of preposition “before” (6.76%), misformation of preposition “under” (5.07%), misformation of preposition “into” (4.50%), misformation of preposition “against” (4.22%), misformation of preposition “by” (4.22%), misformation of preposition “in” (3.38%), misformation of preposition “beside” (3.09 %), misformation of preposition “from” (2.81%), misformation of preposition “after” (2.81%), misformation of preposition “on” (2.81%), misformation of preposition “below” (0.56%). Concerning with the percentage of errors, misformation of preposition “at” has the most dominant error made by the second year students of SMP 9 Pekalongan. It indicates that most of the students have not mastered the use of preposition.
