Abstract

This research is aimed at exploring and describing the teaching-learning process of listening comprehension at SMA Negeri 2 Sukoharjo, the material taught to the students, the method used by the teacher, and the problems faced by the teacher and the students in the listening class. The writer uses descriptive qualitative research. The data in this research are derived from event, informant, and document analysis. The data are collected from observation in the class room and interview with the teacher. The result of the research shows that (1) the material used by the teacher in teaching listening is non-authentic material that is accompanied by the text book and the audio visual. The material is taken from the English book entitled “Look Ahead 1 An English Course” written by Eudia Grace and Th. M. Sudarwati, published by Erlangga. The selection of material is based on the topic in the book, the lesson plan, the indicator of teaching result, and time allotment. They are based on the selecting topic in the book, the lesson plan, the indicators of teaching result, and the time allotment. (2) the method used by the teacher is “Communicative Language Teaching Method”. It is suitable to conduct teaching listening because it can make the students active in the classroom and help them to master English skills, especially listening skill. (3) the problems faced by the teacher in teaching listening are the selection of the material, the difficulties to control the class, the capability of the students, and the motivation of the students to join the listening class. The problems faced by the students in listening class are the limited vocabulary, the speed and accent of the native speaker, and the mastering of English grammar
