Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the students’ mathematics thinking style in problem solving. The type of this research is included in qualitative research. The time of this research made is in the even semester 2015/2016. The subject of this research are teachers and students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. The technique of collecting data are observation, test, and interview. The technique of data analysis is using three-step methods. The validity of the data is using triangulation source and method. The result of this research states (1) Students have a high rate capability of thinking in solving the problems given prefer to use problem-solving strategies Polya. Although there are a few steps from Polya strategy they did not use, they remain capable of resolving the problems appropriately. The level of thinking analytically and realistic in students a high level is much better than the other students. Students do not write the plan settlement issues does not mean he can not do it, he just did not want to write the way the process 2 times. (2) Students have a low level of thinking in resolving the problems prefer to use Polya strategy. They do not use the steps Polya overall, a lot of students who did not write the plan REMEDY because they do not understand a problem. Students who do not understand the problem and have not been able to transform a problem into mathematical form is more likely to operate all the numbers that have been there regardless understand
