Abstract
The problem of the study is to reveal how the major character reflects defense mechanisms in a film with the title Troy with Psychoanalytic Approach. There are two objectives: the first is to analyze the study in term of structural elements, and the second is to analyze the film based on Psychoanalytic Approach. In analyzing Troy, the researcher uses Structural Analysis and Psychoanalytic Approach. There are two kinds of the data sources used in this study, namely primary and secondary. The primary data are the film and script of the film itself and the secondary data sources are those related to the analysis such as the author’s biography, some books of literary theory, internet and articles related to the subject. The technique of data collection in this research is library research by summarizing, paraphrasing and documenting the data, then drawing the conclusion based on the data analysis. The technique of data analysis is descriptive and hermeneutic technique analysis. The analysis is started by analyzing Achilles’ id, ego, superego, and then his anxiety. For the last, the writer makes an analysis of Achilles’ character using defense mechanism. The outcome of the study shows that the problem faced by the major character causes the conflict of his mental condition. He has dreams to be a great warrior but get some anxieties because of the influence of his personality in loosing his cousin and falling in love with Briseis. In the end, the conclusion of this analysis is that the man can do anything from his decision and can do anything for something or someone that he loves and to protect himself by doing defense mechanism.
