Abstract

Background: Nutritional knowledge has a very important role in shaping eat habit of an individual. An individual’s knowledge level of nutrition affect on his or her attitude and behavior in selecting food and on his or her understanding of benefits of nutrients contained in the food he or she eats. A good nutritional knowledge of an individual is expected to affect food consumption in order to achieve good nutritional status. High-fiber food is very good for consumption at amount that suitable with the need. A higher fiber intake is recommended because it is very useful for digestive tract health and hence. Purpose of the Research: To know correlation among nutritional knowledge and frequency of fiber consumption and nutritional status of students of SMA Negeri 4 of Surakarta. Method of the Research: The research is an observational research with cross-sectional approach. Place of the research is SMA Negeri 4 of Surakarta. Data was taken in October-November 2008. Sample of the research is 75 persons. Data consists of respondent characteristic, nutritional knowledge and nutritional status that acquired by using questionnaire, fiber consumption data that acquired by using FFQ (food frequency quantitative). Rank spearman correlational test is used to know correlation beetwen nutritional knowledge and frequency of fiber consumption with nutritional status. Results: From all samples, 11 individuals (14.7%) had good nutritional knowledge, 58 individuals (77.3%) had moderate nutritional knowledge and 6 individuals (8.0%) had poor nutritional knowledge. Samples with underweight nutritional status were 37 individuals (49.3%), samples with normal nutritional status were 35 individuals (46.7%) and samples with overweight nutritional status were 3 individuals (4.0%). From all samples, 38 individuals (50.7%) had consumed fiber frequently and 37 individuals (49.3%) had consumed fiber rarely. Result of statistical test examining for correlation between nutritional knowledge and nutritional status was p>0.05, with value p: 0.073 and for correlation between frequency of fiber consumption and nutritional status was p>0.05 with value of p: 0.574). Conclusion: There were no correlation beetwen nutritional knowledge with nutrition status as well as frequency ot fiber consumption with nutritional status.
