Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the teaching-learning process of English at SLB-D YPAC Surakarta and describing the difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching English at the orthopeadically handicapped class. This research is a qualitative research. The data are taken from interview, observation and document analysis. The subjects of the study are the students and the English teacher at SLB-D YPAC Surakarta in 2007/2008. The object of the study is English teaching-learning process in SLB-D YPAC Surakarta. The result of study shows that (1) the teaching-learning process of English in SLB-D YPAC Surakarta is different from the regular class, related to the curriculum, and media. The curriculum is simple. It is only to introduce the English to the orthopeadically handicapped learners. The media are concrete objects surround to the students. The methods used by the teacher in SLB-D YPAC Surakarta in teaching English are CLT and ALM. (2) There are several problems appear from the process of teaching and learning vocabulary faced by the teacher and the students, namely the problem of the different capability of the students, the students cannot develop their initiative, it takes long time to finish one topic and the teacher cannot attract the students on the learning process on the class.
