Abstract
This research aims at finding and describing the method implemented in teaching listening at SMP Negeri 1 Sragen, describing the problems faced by the teacher, and describing the solution applied by the teacher to overcome the problems. The research was done in SMP Negeri 1 Sragen. The writer took the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Sragen as the subject of the study. To collect the data, the writer used observation, interview, and documentation. Observation is an activity in a certain situation to get the data. Interview is dialogue done by the writer to get information from the teacher. It was conducted by asking the teacher about the English teaching- learning process. The teacher in SMP Negeri 1 Sragen uses Three Phases Technique (TPT), the method created by the teacher. TPT means technique used by the teacher to explain how to fulfill jumbled words or sentences. After observing the class five times, the researcher found that the teacher took three procedures in teaching listening: pre- listening, whilst- listening and post- listening. There were some problems appear during the teaching listening process. The problems faced by the teacher were limited time and the difficulty to organize the students. While the problems faced by the students were limited vocabulary, difficulty to memorize the story and difficulty to concentrate and interpret the message on the target language. In order to solve the problems faced by the teacher and the students, the teacher created the method that was appropriate with the material given to help the students mastering the four basic skills of English language. In handling the students, the teacher gave motivation to the students and created a comfortable atmosphere in the classroom so that they felt happy and comfortable.
