Abstract

This research paper elaborates the portraits of oppression against labor in Edward Zwick’s movie, Blood Diamond film that is analyzed through Marxist approach. The objectives of the researches are to analyze the film based on its structural elements and to analyze the film based on the Marxist approach, by identifying the relation between the movie and the social background of early twenty first century American society. This research paper belongs to a qualitative research. The data sources come from both primary data source, that is Blood Diamond film and secondary data sources are information about the director’s biography, websites about the movie, the social background of America in early twenty first century and theory of Marxist approach. The method to analyze the data is descriptive analysis. Having analyzed the movie, the researcher comes to the conclusion as follows: (1) the director wants to express that the lower people become the marginalized and oppressed in the process of development, (2) The director criticizes injustice of American society, particularly the oppression against labor in the capitalist system.
