Abstract
The research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The objectives of the research are to classify the translation and the translation shift of personal pronouns and to describe the pragmatics values of the translation of personal pronouns in The Old Man and the Sea into Lelaki Tua dan Laut. The method of collecting data is documenting. While the method of data analysis are comparing the data between SL and TL, classifying the translation and the translation shift of personal pronouns, and describing the pragmatics values of the translation of personal pronouns in TheOld Man and the Sea, drawing conclusion. The result of the research show that first, there are 34 varieties or of the translation of personal pronouns. They are I is translated into aku, I is translated into akupun, I is not translated, I is translated into ku-, I is translated into -ku, You is translated into kau, You is translated into kaupun, You is translated into kaulah, You is translated into -mu, We is translated into kami, We is translated into kita, We is not translated, They is translated into mereka, They is translated into merekapun, They is not translated, They is translated into non-human reference, He is translated into ia, He is translated into iapun, He is not translated, He is translated into dia, He is translated into -nya, He is translated into human reference, He is translated non-human reference, She is translated into ia, She is not translated, She is translated into laut, and It is not translated, It is translated into itu, It is translated into ini, It is translated into ia, It is translated into non-human reference, It is translated into sakit, It is translated into human reference. Second, there are three translation shifts of personal pronouns, they are personal pronoun is translated into noun, personal pronoun is translated into demonstrative and personal pronoun is translated into adjective.
