Abstract

The research is about Interrogative Utterances in English translation of Koran chapter 30 by Muhammad Muhsin. The aims of the research are to describe the pattern the patterns of interrogative sentence and the intentions of interrogative utterances. The type of the research is descriptive qualitative research. The method of collecting data is searching the data from English Translation of Koran Chapter 30, selecting the data which are included interrogative utterances, and coding the data to make easy in analyzing. In analyzing the pattern, the researcher refers to follow the patterns of interrogative form in English Grammar. Meanwhile, in analyzing the intentions, the researcher following three bases of speech act (locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act) in pragmatic. The study shows the variety of the patterns and the intentions of interrogative utterances in English translation of Koran chapter 30 by Muhammad Muhsin. The variants of the patterns are: yes-no question and wh-question. Yes-no question is categorized into simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence and compound-complex sentence. Then, wh-question is categorized into subject question and non-subject question. The intentions of the study cover implied meanings of reminding, advising, clarifying, threatening, honoring etc.
