Abstract
This research paper aims at developing a collaborative learning model in teaching speaking using role play based on the School Level Based Curriculum. The specific objectives of this research are to describe the procedure of collaborative model in teaching speaking using role play, to find out the effectiveness of collaborative learning model in students’ performance in speaking through role play, and the strengths and weaknesses of collaborative learning model in teaching speaking using role play. The method used in this study is developmental research, whose characters are procedural, conceptual, and theoretical. The subjects of this research are the teacher and the first year students of SMA N 1 SRAGEN. Especially X-A students. The object of the study is the implementation of collaborative learning model in teaching speaking using role play based on the School Level Based Curriculum and its effectiveness on students’ performance. Based on the observation, the writer draws some conclusions about the collaborative learning model in teaching speaking using role play based on the School Level-Based Curriculum in SMA N 1 Sragen as follows: (1) The procedure of collaborative learning used is as follow: (a) the students are divided into 4-5 groups, (b) The teacher gives information about the materials to the students, (c) the teacher gives model related to the materials discussed, (d) the students make conversation related to the expression or the situation given by the teacher, (e) the students practice the dialogue with certain characteristics in front of the class, (f) the others students give comment and ask questions to the groups who practice the dialogue, (g) the teacher gives the other topic to be discussed in every groups, after that every groups send their friend into other groups to present their dialogue with different topic, (h) the teacher evaluates the students’ performance in doing role play and work in pairs and make conclusion about the materials discussed. (2) The use of collaborative learning model through role play in teaching speaking is effective in improving students’ performance. It is proved by the students’ reaction in speaking. (3) The strengths of collaborative learning model in teaching speaking using role play based on the School Level Based Curriculum are: (a) makes the students support each other, (b) makes the class more interesting and not boring, (c) improves the students’ motivation in learning, (d) makes the students critical and creative. (4) The weaknesses of collaborative learning model in teaching speaking using role play based on the School Level Based Curriculum are: (a) the students who have lower capability in speaking are difficult in joining teaching learning process, (b) the teacher is demanded to be facilitator for the students in low capability in speaking, (c) the teacher should manage the time carefully because doing role play needs much time.
