Abstract
This research is conducted to describe how reading magazine is applied in teaching grammar for Junior High School students and to know the result of teaching grammar using magazine. Action research was done in SMP N 2 Tawangharjo Grobogan. The writer took class VIII B of SMP N 2 Tawangharjo Grobogan in 2008/2009 academic year as the subject of the study. To collect the data, the writer used observation, test, and document. Observation is an activity in a certain situation to get the data. Test was given to the students in the form of pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2. Document is the evidence of the research such as test result. There are two cycles in this action research in which each cycle was conducted in three meetings. After analyzing the data, the writer described the result of the research which the mean score of pre-test is 40, 40. 17, 86 % of the students reach the target. In post -test 1 the mean score is 61, 68 in which 60, 71 % of the students can reach the target score. In post-test 2 the mean score is 69, 75 in which 75 % of the students can reach the target score. Considering the result of the research, there is improvement on the students’ grammar mastery from the first and second cycle. The students were also enthusiastic, active, and happy in learning grammar. It can be concluded that reading magazine is a good technique to improve the students’ grammar mastery.
