Abstract

The object of the study is a movie Shakespeare in Love directed by John Madden. The study is to reveal how gender inequality is reflected in Shakespeare in Love directed by John Madden published in 1998. The objective of the study is to analyze the structural elements in the movie and to analyze gender inequality of the movie based on feminist approach. The researcher employs the descriptive qualitative research as a type of the research. The data sources are divided into two, namely primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is the movie and script of Shakespeare in Love and the secondary data source is information related to the primary data source, website, and book about feminist approach. The method of collecting data is observation and library review. The method of analyzing data is descriptive technique. Based on the analysis, the researcher draws two conclusions: first, based on the structural analysis, John Madden wants to deliver a moral message that women are important in men’s success and women can even have better achievement than men. Second, based on the feminist analysis, John Madden represents gender relation in late twentieth century in which women inheritage gender oppression based on the traditional value of Victorian ideals.
