Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of teaching speaking using roleplay technique and its result. The data are field note, interview scripts, scores of students. They are taken from informants, events, and document. The subject of this study is the eighth year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta in 2007 / 2008 Academic year. Based on the writer’s teaching of speaking through role-play technique, the result of the study shows that the students participation during teaching learning process can be improved by using role-play technique. They involve more actively in teaching learning process than before. Beside that they were more confident, brave and not worried in making conversational dialogue in pairs. By using this technique they can imagine their past experience to play the roles, so they feel easier in doing their exercises and also they were more interested when she gave them quiz. She gave quiz in order that to make them more active and she tried to create a good atmosphere in the teaching learning process. From the students score of pre test, test one, test two and post test it can be seen that the total of students score increase from 66, 69, 69 to 10. It can also be said that the result of teaching speaking by using role-play technique to the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta is successful.
