Abstract

This research aims at observing the teaching of English using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) at SDN 2 Gonilan Kartasura. In this research, the data are collected from teaching process, information and document. There are two techniques of colleting data, namely, observation and interview. It appears from the research that the objective of the teaching is suitable with the 2004 English curriculum. The syllabus is a combination of grammatical, situational, and functional-national syllabus on language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), language aspects (vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar), procedure and the type of teaching learning activities deals with CLT. Based on the implementation of CLT in teaching English to the fifth year students of SDN 2 Gonilan Kartasura, the writer has come to the conclusion that there are strengths and weaknesses in teaching-learning process. The strengths of English teaching-learning process are that the students can develop communicative ability in English, which involves the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), and language aspects (vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar). One of the weaknesses of English teaching learning process is that the students have difficulties in mastering the four language skills. So, in teaching learning process, the teacher tries to explain the material step by step.
