Abstract
The research investigates how defense mechanism is used by the major character to survive in worst situation in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist movie, especially viewed from psychoanalytic approach. The objectives of the research are to analyze the movie based on the structural elements of the movie and to analyze the personality structure of major character based on the psychoanalytic theory, by identifying the relation between mental condition of major character and structural elements of the movie. The research paper belongs to the qualitative research. The object of the study is the personality of the Wladyslaw Szpilman in The Pianist. The data sources come from primary data that is the movie and the secondary data sources are biography of the author, websites that related with the movie, and the theory of psychoanalytic approach. The method of the data collection of data analysis is descriptive analysis. Having analyzed the movie, the writer can make conclusion that in bad situation and condition great motivation can make a person to support the interest. He will ask the assistances from the other person to save his life, such as in Szpilman character. In his tension, he needs defense to reduce his anxiety. In this case, defense mechanism will be used to reduce the anxiety by considering the id, ego, and superego.
