Abstract

This study aims at describing the technique of teaching English speaking to the second year students of SMA Negeri 3 Pemalang in 2007/2008 academic year, the problems faced by the teacher and the students in teaching learning speaking, and the techniques implemented by the teacher to overcome the problems. The methods of collecting data are observation, interview, and document. The observation was done in SMA Negeri 3 Pemalang. The writer observed 2 classes, XI IPS 1 and XI IPS 2 of SMA Negeri 3 Pemalang in 2007/2008 academic year as subject of the study. After analyzing the data, the writer finds some findings. The first, the techniques used by the teacher are discussion, storytelling, and brainstorming. The second, the problems faced by the teacher are: (1) Students mentality, (2) the capability of the students. There are some problems faced by the students in learning process, those are: (1) The teacher’s readiness, (2) shyness or nervousness, (3) vocabulary. The third, the techniques used by the teache r are discussion, storytelling and brainstorming. The procedures are : (1)The teacher gives the text discussion to the students then the students retell the text in front the class. When the students retell the text usually there some difficult words in pronunciation and the teacher gives the explanation about the difficult words. In this case the teacher uses discussion and story telling technique., (2) the teacher gives 5 words then the teacher asks the student to make sentences and read the sentences in front of the class. In this technique of teachin g, the teacher uses brainstorming, (3) the teacher gives ten minutes to the students to make free speaking before the teacher gives the debate, in this techniq ue of teaching, the teacher uses discussion, (4) in teaching learning process the teacher always speaks English.
