Abstract
This research is aimed at knowing whether or not teaching reading using picture story can improve students’ reading comprehension at elementary school of SD N 1 Pledokan Sumowono Semarang. Teaching reading using picture story is used to improve the students’ motivation and their achievement in learning English. In achieving the objectives of this research, the writer uses Classroom Action Research in which each cycle consist of four steps, namely planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. There are three cycles in this research in which each cycle is conducted in two meetings. The writer takes the fifth year that consists of twenty-one students as the subject of this research. The methods of collecting data in this researh are observation, document, and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer describes the result of the research. The mean score of pre-test is 65% and the mean score in post-test is 81%. The result of pre-test and post-test indicates that the students’ reading comprehension improved. The students also have a positive response. They are not bored and more easily learn reading. The students become active in the classroom during the lesson. They are also motivated to read the text. The result of the mean scores before and after the treatment indicates that the students can improve their reading comprehension.
