Abstract

This research aims first, to describe the teaching writing based on School Level-based Curriculum to the first year student in SMA Negeri 1Sukoharjo in 2007/2008 academic year, second, to describe the problems faced by the teacher in teaching writing. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method. The method of collecting data is observation, interview, and document analyses. The data are the goal of teaching writing, method of teaching writing, teaching materials, teaching learning process, the means of assessment. The research was done on 24th November 2007 until 24 December 2007. By using that method, the writer analyses the data by collecting, classifying, analyzing, and drawing conclusion. The results of this research show that: first, (a) the goals of teaching writing in SMA Negeri 1 Sukoharjo are to enable the students in understanding English as a means of communication and to enable the students to practice in using English in written form, (b) methods of teaching writing applied by the teacher are productbased approach and process-based approach, (c) the teacher does not only use textbook as the material but also use a worksheet to make the students understand the materials more, (d) in conducting the teaching-learning process of writing, the teacher uses seven steps, namely opening the class, explanation, consultation, practice, presentation, judgment/ evaluation, and closing the class, (e) the technique implemented by the teacher in teaching writing are clustering and W-H Questions, (f) the means of assessment in teaching writing is from the product of writing. While the problems faced by the teacher in teaching writing are classroom management, limited time, and different capability of the students.
