Abstract

This research investigates the forms of register used in caving division and their situational meaning. In line with the investigation, the objectives of this research are to describe the forms of caving division registers and to clarify the meaning of caving division registers in comparison to the real meaning. This research belongs to qualitative research. The data are caving division registers in the forms of words. The data are taken by using observation and documentation method. The data are analyzed based on their linguistic forms and their meaning in comparison to their real meaning. The result of the research shows that; (1) The linguistic forms of caving registers are only words. The words can be simple words and complex words. The complex words derived from affixation, compounding and abbreviation. (2) Based on the kinds of register meaning, there are 5 meanings: a. the meaning of caving registers are narrower than the real meaning, b. the meaning of caving registers share some features of meaning with the real meaning. c. the meaning of caving registers is identical to the real meaning. d. the meaning of caving registers is different from the real meaning. e. the meaning of caving registers presents a new word that has no real meaning.
