Abstract
This research paper is aimed at observing the method used by English teacher in teaching speaking at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta. The objectives of this research are to describe method used by English teacher in teaching speaking and the problem faced by the teacher. The research is conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta. The writer conducts descriptive qualitative research. The data used in this research are field notes, interview script, the list of students, and the syllabus. They are taken from events, informant, and document. Based on the observation and interview, the writer draws some conclusions. In teaching speaking, the teachers use communicative language teaching, this method is appropriate for the students because it focuses on communicative competence. The technique of CLT is role playing. The problems faced by the teacher are different capability of the students, shyness or nervousness, classroom management, limited time, the students’ interest the English lesson, and unstable motivation of the students.
