Abstract
The object of the research is the novel entitled The Mayor of Carsterbridge. The study focuses on struggle for love of Henchard. The Major Problem of this study is how struggle for love is reflected in Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge based on individual psychological approach. This research is aimed at analyzing the structural element of The Mayor of Casterbridge and describing struggle for love of Henchard in the story based on individual psychological approach. This research paper is qualitative research. The object of the study is The Mayor of Casterbridge written by Thomas Hardy. The primary data source is The Mayor of Casterbridge it self and the secondary data sources are the other sources related to the analysis such as from the website, journal and other referenced that has connection with the research. The method of data collection is documentation research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. Based on the analysis, the writer draws some conclusions as follows: First, The Mayor of Casterbridge is Thomas Hardy's literary work that tells us about the struggle for love of one of major characters, namely Michael Henchard. Second, Michael Henchard psychological problem may represent the psychological cases the author his experienced or observed.
