Abstract
The research aims to know whether on TPR will give better achievement than GTM. The class is divided on two groups. The first is experimental group, which are students, taught using TPR and the second is control group which are students taught using GTM. Related to the objectives of the study, the writer uses experimental method. This research is carried out in SD N 1 Ngadirojo from March 28th until May 9th 2008. they consist of 40 students. The first group is taught by using TPR and second group is taught by using GTM. Before the experiment begun, the writer gives the students pre-test to know the students’ readiness. After conducting the experiment, the writer gives the students to know their scores in order to calculate t- test. In collecting the data, he used a vocabulary test. The test consisted of 20 items. In analysing the data, the writer analysed the students’ work from the post-test to know the effectiveness both techniques. The result of the research indicates that the students taught using TPR get a higher score ( x = 71.65) than the students taught using GTM ( x = 61.65). The t-test shows that the effectiveness in teaching vocabulary using TPR is better than GTM. It can be seen from the value of t-test is 3.117, which is greater than the value of t-table ( 2.021 ). The result implies that teaching vocabulary using TPR method can give better improvement than GTM in teaching vocabulary and TPR is more effective to be applied than GTM.
