Abstract

This research aims to describe the curriculum that focuses on goal, syllabus and material, the techniques used by the teac her in teaching speaking, and find out the difficulties faced by the teacher and the students in teaching learning speaking. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data are taken from (1) event; the teaching speaking activities which focus on the techniques used by the teacher and the procedures to the first year students at SMA Negeri 2 Wonogiri, (2) informant; the English teacher and the first year students, (3) document; syllabus, lesson plan and textbook. The writer collects the data by observing the speaking class, interviewing the teacher and the students, and analyzing the document. From the data analysis, the writer draws some conclusions. First, the curric ulum used by the teacher is School-based Curriculum (KTSP) that consist of: (a) goals of teaching speaking are: to make the students active in speaking English either in classroom or out classroom, and to give a chance for students to use English more often and able to communicate with others, (b) syllabus is made and arranged by the teachers who teach English. The syllabus is arranged based on School-based Curriculum, (c) the materials are taken from textbook and other sources. Second, the techniques used by the teacher are dialogue, discussion, prepared talks, retelling story and describing picture. Third, the roles of teacher are as organizer and controller, as observer, as material developer, as counselor and friend, as demonstrator and as evaluator. Fourth, the roles of students are as listener and as performer. Fifth, the difficulties faced by the teacher are lack of time, quantity of students in the classroom and student’s mentality. The last, the difficulties faced by the students are vocabulary mastery, pronunciation, grammar and anxiety.
