Abstract

This research aims at describing the technique of teaching English for Nursery at the first semester applied by lecturers at AKPER PKU Muhammadiyah Surakarta (In 2007/2008 Academic year), and the problems faced by the lecturer . The research was done on 1 October 2007 until 30 November 2007. This research paper is a the descriptive qualitative study in whichthe data are interview script, list of students, syllabus and lesson plan. The writer gets the data from event, informant, and document. The techniques of collecting data are the observation and interview of the English teaching- learning process to identify the technique applied and the problems faced by the lecturer. The result of the research shows that the objective of teaching English at this school is to make the students master both active and passive English skills. They will able to understand the English term and communicate fluently. English also equip them with the knowledge for such opportunities in their specialty. There are two lecturers who teach the English subject. The first lecturer uses skill centered approach in teaching English. He uses variety techniques that make the students more active in practicing their English skill. For examples, in teaching listening he uses an interesting song to teach the students. Then, in teaching speaking he divides the students into some groups and asks them to do a conversation according to the topic, etc. He does not always teach the students according the book. The second lecturer to use language centered approach. He tends to explain the role and the uses of linguistics. The lecturer has several problems in teaching, namely students’ confidence, time allotment, students’ capability, etc.
