Abstract

The major problem of this study is to reveal the coping behavior of David Balfour reflected in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Kidnapped. The objectives of the study are; to analyze the structural elements of the novel and to analyze the character of David Balfour based on individual psychological analysis developed by Alfred Adler. In conducting this study, the writer uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data, the novel Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson, and the secondary data sources taken from some books and also other matters which support this analysis. In analyzing the data, he applies two approaches. Firstly, structural approach is used to analyze the elements of the novel. It consists of characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style, and theme. Secondly, the individual psychological approach is used to analyze the coping behavior of David Balfour in facing his life problems that influences his personality. The writer finds that the character of David Balfour gets the maturity in his personality that is shaped from his effort to cope his problems in gaining his life goals. In reaching the life goals David ha s to leave his childhood to a step of a maturity. He has faced the problems that eventually endanger his life. But by his creative self to cope the obstacles, he becomes a person that has rational thinking and manages his act well in every problem he faced.
