Abstract

This research aims to find the effectiveness of using games for teaching vocabulary. In order to know the effectiveness the writer compares the result of teaching by using conventional method to the result of teaching using games. This research is a descriptive research which was conducted from 6th August, 2007 to 25th December, 2007. The research population was the fifth grade students of SD 1 Tempursari. It consists of 31 students as the samples taken from one class. The sample was taken by using sensus. To collect the data, the writer used vocabulary test which is the same for pre-test and post test. To know the difference of the scores between the result of teaching by using conventional method and teaching using games, the writer used t-test. The result of t-test shows that there is a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between the teaching using conventional method and teaching using games. The result of t-test also shows the higher vocabulary achievement by the students after taught by using games. The students who are taught by using games have average achievement (82,161) which is higher than the achievement students who are taught by using conventional method (69,677). The result of this study implies that teaching by using games are more effective to be applied in vocabulary teaching especially for the students of elementary school based on this finding. It is suggested that English teachers apply games in teaching vocabulary at the classroom. To apply games in the classroom, the teacher should use selective games which are appropriate with the material of the class. The students who are taught by using games will get better ability rather than students who have been taught using conventional method.
