Abstract

This study elaborates the American dream in Irwin Shaw’s Rich Man Poor Man viewed from sociological approach. The objectives of the research are to analyze the structural elements of the novel and to analyze the novel based on sociological perspective by identifying the relationship between the novel and the social background of American society in post war era. This is a qualitative study. In this method, the researcher uses two types of data resources, namely primary and secondary data sources. The primary data source and object of the study is the novel itself, meanwhile the secondary data source are biography of the author, websites and other sources that support the analysis of the novel. Based on the analysis, the researcher draws some conclusion as follows; first, Irwin Shaw creates the characters in Rich Man Poor Man are as the representation of American people in post war era. It’s proof that the structural elements in Rich Man Poor Man are matched with the social condition in post war era in America. Based on sociological analysis, there are some points that could be taken as follows: the American Dream appears and popular as the great effect of some wars faced by American people, the standard of American Dream consists of equality, freedom, social respectability and prosperity.
