Abstract

The aims of the research are to describe (1) the types of error, (2) the dominant type of error and, (3) the source of error. The research was conducted to the intermediate grade of GAMA English course speaking class. The object of the research were the erroneous utterances taken from the students speaking class. The data of the research were erroneous utterances and the source is the intermediate grade students of GAMA English course speaking class. Dealing with the research instrument of collecting the data, the researcher records the student’s utterances in order to find the erroneous sentences. From the result of the recording the researcher gets the data to be analyzed. The collected data then were analyzed descriptively by means of Error Analysis. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses procedures of Error Analysis, they are; identification, description, and explanation. Based on the analysis of the data, the result of the research shows that there are 86 erroneous utterances. The errors are analyzed based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy. There are four types of error, they are omission, addition, misformation, and misordering error, with the highest percentage is for omission error (52,94 %), and the next most significant error is misformation errors (31,09 %), addition errors (12,61 %), and the last is misordering errors (3,36 %). There are two sources of error, they are interlingual and intralingual transfer. The result of this research is that the most of the students still make a lot of errors in omission, especially in omission of content words, tenses patterns, and –s/-es for regular plural noun.
