Abstract

This research aims at finding the implementation of School Level-based Curriculum and knowing the difficulties faced by the English teacher in implementing Competency-based Curriculum into School Level-based Curriculum in teaching learning English. The writer takes the English teacher and students of seventh year as the subject of the study. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The writer collects the data by observing the English class, document, and interview with the English teacher and some students of seventh year of SMP Negeri 2 Kartasura. From the research finding, data analysis and discussion, the writer draws some conclusions. First, the implementation of School Level-based Curriculum in the teaching English is very simple on how the material can be transferred. Second, the teaching-learning activities are still lecturing than discussing however the teacher uses the steps based on the School Level-based Curriculum but it can not be implemented maximally. Third, the teacher uses the material that is similar with the cycles, genre, steps, topic and sub topic which contain in the main hand- book. Fourth, the teacher and student’s roles can not be played maximally. The teacher’s roles are as transfer knowledge, motivator, observer, controller and evaluator, while the students’ roles as doer and listener. Fifth the assessments of students’ English achievement are measured by scoring the assignment that is used by the teacher is not appropriate with the indication of School Level-based Curriculum. Sixth, there are three problems that are faced by the English teacher to implement the School Level-based Curriculum. Neither the headmaster nor teacher is able to design curriculum, Neither school committee nor department of national educations officer understand the method of designing a good curriculum, and the confusion of the implementation School Level-based Curriculum.
