Abstract
The research aims to know the significant difference between scores of pre- test and post- test of teaching vocabulary using short story and conventional method. The class is divided into 2 groups. Each group consists of 36 students. The first is experimental group, which the students are taught using short story and the second is control group which the students are taught using conventional method. The writer uses experimental research. This research is carried out at SD N Pucangan 03 Kartasura from April until May 2008. The writer uses pre test and post test in each group to know the significant difference of both in order to calculate t-test. The test consists of 40 items. The result of the research indicates that the students taught using short story get higher score (x = 7.29) than those taught using conventional method (x = 5.05).The result of the study implies that short story is effective to be implemented in vocabulary teaching especially for the students of elementary school. It is suggested that English teacher implements short story in teaching vocabulary at the class.
