Abstract

This thesis analyzes the translation of the second-person address forms in a film entitled Top Gun. It aims to find out the types of translation variation of second-person address forms used by the characters in the U.S Navy military community in film entitled Top Gun and to find out the social meaning changes in the translations of the second-person address forms used by the U.S Navy community in the film. The source of the data was the Top Gun film. The data are in form of second-person address forms in source language (SL) and target language (TL) was found in the film. In conducting the research, the researcher analyzes each datum based on social meanings point of view by comparing the social meaning of the second-person address forms between SL and TL. The results of the research show that (1) there are four variations find in his research. The translation variations of the second-person address terms are classified according to three categories namely the U.S. Navy superior officers, the U.S. Navy subordinate officers to superior officers and the U.S. Navy officers to other equal officers, (2) there are two social meaning changes in the translations of the second-person addresses used by the characters in the U.S. Navy military community in the film based on the social meanings of the those addresses. There are (1) Subordinate Officers to Superior Officers or which classified as (a) Pronoun ‘You’,(b) Multiple Names, (2) Officers to other Equal Officers.
