Abstract
The increasingly complex nature of environmental degradation underscores the importance of strengthening ecological awareness through education, including Islamic education. Environmental fiqh has emerged as an approach within Islamic Religious Education (PAI) that positions humans as stewards and holds them responsible for maintaining the balance of nature. This study aims to analyze the integration of environmental fiqh values into the PAI curriculum and lesson planning, their implementation through instruction, habit formation, and school culture, as well as students’ understanding in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains at Muhammadiyah PK Kottabarat Junior High School in Surakarta and Muhammadiyah 3 Junior High School in Yogyakarta. This study employed a qualitative approach with a multiple-case study design. Research data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving school officials and students. Data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources and techniques, while data analysis utilized the interactive model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, encompassing the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that the integration of environmental fiqh values at both schools has been implemented through school policies, curriculum documents, Islamic Education (PAI) teaching materials, and the Adiwiyata program. SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta demonstrates a stronger pattern of integration in institutional and school cultural aspects through environmental awareness-building, program continuity, and the involvement of the school community. Meanwhile, SMP Muhammadiyah PK Kottabarat Surakarta places greater emphasis on normative and innovative integration patterns through the reinforcement of Islamic values, the use of technology, and creative environment-based activities. The application of environmental fiqh values at both schools is evident through PAI lessons, habit-forming activities, and a culture of environmental awareness. Students’ understanding at both schools ranges from basic to intermediate levels—that is, they are able to understand, accept, and practice environmentally friendly behaviors—although their critical analysis skills and independence in solving environmental problems still need to be developed.
