Abstract
This research was conducted due to the lack of data on the distribution of cave mouths in the Gunung Sewu karst area, Paranggupito District, Wonogiri Regency, which has so far relied only on information from residents and focused on caves containing water, tourism potential, and conservation areas that are vulnerable to degradation. The objectives of this study were (1) to analyse the ability of the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model in predicting the distribution of cave mouth locations, and (2) to identify environmental factors that influence the formation and distribution of cave mouths in the area. This study used a mixed approach combining field surveys and secondary data analysis. Primary data was obtained through a field survey of Sambiharjo village using accidental sampling to validate 20 cave mouth points. Secondary data included six environmental variables: lithology, distance from rivers, NDVI, elevation, Topographic Position Index (TPI), and slope inclination. Cave mouth distribution modelling was performed using MaxEnt software, followed by overlay and accuracy validation using AUC values and field tests. The results show that the MaxEnt model has excellent ability in predicting cave mouth distribution with a AUC value of 0.937 (Excellent category). Field validation in Sambiharjo village confirmed that 18 out of 20 cave points (90%) had a probability value above 0.5, in accordance with the model's predictions. The most dominant environmental factor was lithology (rock type) with a contribution of 87.6%, particularly the easily soluble massive limestone of the Wonosari-Punung formation. The distance from the river variable contributed 5.4% as a secondary control factor, while other supporting factors included NDVI (3.6%), elevation (1.6%), TPI (1.4%), and slope (0.4%), which played a role in creating environmental conditions that supported the karstification process. This study produced a probability map of cave mouths that can be used as a basis for sustainable exploration and conservation of karst areas.
