Abstract

The maintenance of conventional outdoor fish ponds is highly dependent on the stability of water quality parameters, particularly temperature, pH, and turbidity. Conventional pond water temperature control typically uses an on-off control system with static thresholds, which is prone to energy and water wastage and incapable of detecting actuator ineffectiveness. This study aims to design and implement an Internet of Things (IoT)-based adaptive pond temperature control system using an ESP32-S3 microcontroller equipped with a thermal actuator failure detection algorithm. The system dynamically calculates the pond water volume using an A02YYUW V2 ultrasonic sensor to determine an adaptive detection period (5 to 30 minutes). The ineffectiveness detection algorithm compares the actual rate of temperature rise with the theoretical thermodynamic rate based on the heater power (500 W). If the actual rate is less than 60% of the theoretical rate, the system detects actuator failure, shuts off the heater, applies a 2-hour cooldown period, and sends a notification via Blynk. For cooling, the system detects solenoid ineffectiveness based on the estimated temperature drop time and automatically lowers the cooling threshold when the ambient temperature exceeds 35 °C. Test results on pond volumes of 100, 300, and 400 liters demonstrate that the system successfully maintains water temperature at optimal conditions and responsively detects thermal actuator ineffectiveness. The implementation of this adaptive algorithm improves the reliability of fish pond automation systems and prevents electrical energy and water wastage caused by undetected actuator failures.
