Abstract

This study investigates the flouting of Gricean maxims in user comments posted on the BBC News Instagram account in response to posts about social issues, specifically interstate conflict and natural disasters published in 2025. Anchored in Grice's (1975) Cooperative Principle, the study adopts a qualitative descriptive design to identify (1) the types of maxim flouting present in the comments, (2) the conversational implicatures generated by such flouting, and (3) the communicative purposes underlying the flouting. Thirty-eight comments showing indications of non-literal or indirect language were purposively selected through non-participant observation and analyzed using qualitative content analysis grounded in Grice's four maxims. The findings show that all four maxims were flouted, with the maxim of quantity flouted most frequently (11 cases), followed by quality (10 cases), relevance (9 cases), and manner (8 cases). The implicatures generated were classified as Particularized Conversational Implicature (PCI, 34 cases) and Generalized Conversational Implicature (GCI, 4 cases), with PCI dominating because most implied meanings required contextual knowledge of the specific BBC report being commented on. Three communicative purposes were identified: expressive purpose (15 cases), critical purpose (13 cases), and reflective purpose (10 cases), with expressive purpose the most dominant. The study concludes that maxim flouting in BBC's comment section functions as a deliberate pragmatic strategy that allows users to convey sarcasm, criticism, emotional release, and critical reflection indirectly within the constrained format of social media, confirming the continued relevance of Grice's Cooperative Principle for analyzing contemporary digital discourse on sensitive social issues.
