Abstract

A fault is a fracture in the Earth's rock layers accompanied by the displacement of rock blocks due to internal Earth pressures; this displacement is a frequent cause of earthquakes. This significant hazard potential entails risks of damage and casualties, necessitating heightened vigilance among communities near the Opak Fault, particularly during seismic events. Consequently, this study aims to understand earthquake susceptibility to facilitate disaster mitigation and risk reduction for communities in vulnerable areas. The study objectives are: (1) To analyze the level of earthquake susceptibility in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta; and (2) To identify the dominant factors influencing this susceptibility. The research employs scoring and overlay methods; physical parameters determining earthquake characteristics specifically slope, soil type, and distance-to-fault maps for Bantul Regency are processed using ArcGIS software via the overlay technique. The findings indicate that: (1) Bantul District (Kapanewon) falls into various earthquake susceptibility classifications, ranging from very low and low to moderately high, high, and very high. This is confirmed by scoring calculations and weighting; the closer an area is to the fault line, the greater the potential for damage and casualties. (2) Distance to the fault is the dominant factor influencing earthquake susceptibility, as it is directly linked to the seismic hazard source specifically the Opak Fault, a major source of seismic activity in Bantul Regency. Geographically, the Opak Fault extends approximately 45 kilometers, following the course of the Opak River. The river originates on the slopes of Mount Merapi, flows southward, and empties directly into the Indian Ocean at Parangtritis Beach, Bantul Regency.
