Abstract
This study aims to examine audience reception of the representation of female characters as ghosts in the film KKN di Desa Penari through Stuart Hall’s reception theory. The research focuses on the visual representation of Badarawuhi through the film poster, Badarawuhi as an elegant yet frightening female character, the representation of women as ghost characters, gender relations among the characters, the dominance of female ghost characters in Indonesian horror films, and Badarawuhi’s role as a female ghost. This study employs a qualitative method with a reception analysis approach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with six informants who had watched KKN di Desa Penari. The data were analyzed using Stuart Hall’s three audience reception positions: the dominant-hegemonic position, negotiated position, and oppositional position. The findings show that most informants were positioned in the dominant-hegemonic position, accepting Badarawuhi’s representation as an elegant, mysterious, powerful female figure who influences the storyline. Some informants occupied the negotiated position, accepting the representation while providing critical interpretations of the dominance of female ghosts and gender constructions in horror films. No informants were identified as occupying the oppositional position. The findings indicate that Badarawuhi is received not only as a frightening ghost figure but also as a woman with power, control, and an important role in developing the film’s conflict
