Abstract
Rapid population growth and urbanization in urban areas have led to an increased demand for decent housing. Karang Tengah District is one area facing this pressure, which has triggered the development of unplanned settlements that risk becoming slums. These slum areas in Karang Tengah District are characterized by high building density, poor housing quality, and a lack of basic infrastructure and facilities—such as clean water, sanitation, drainage, and neighborhood road access. These conditions degrade environmental quality and public health while increasing vulnerability to disasters like flooding and fires. The majority of Karang Tengah’s population consists of urban dwellers of working age, employed in both the informal and formal sectors—including trade, services, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). A distinctive feature of the local community is its involvement in the ornamental plant trade and household-based economic activities, which have evolved into primary sources of livelihood for some residents. This demonstrates that the residents are not merely urban consumers but also active economic participants driving the area's growth. In 2024, Karang Tengah District is experiencing dynamic development, mirroring the urban expansion of the greater Jakarta (DKI Jakarta) region. Overall, the area's economic growth rate is estimated at 5.5%–6.0%, slightly above the national average. Economic activity is driven by the trade and service sectors, as well as rapidly growing MSMEs. The area has a significant population—approximately 250 people—spanning RT (Neighborhood Units) 5, 6, and 7 in Parung Jaya Urban Village.
