Abstract
N.V. Braat Machinefabriek, founded by B. Braat Jzn in 1901, was one of the pillars of industry during the Dutch East Indies era and was later nationalized as BAPPIT Barata (the predecessor of PT Barata Indonesia) in 1958. Following the relocation of PT Barata’s operations to Gresik in 2005, the factory site in Ngagel, Surabaya, suffered physical deterioration, leading to the demolition of most of its buildings. Currently, the site lies abandoned, with only one original building and an additional structure remaining neither of which has been operational since 2023. This research aims to revitalize this historic area through the design of a Creative Space with two primary objectives: (1) to implement an adaptive reuse strategy on existing buildings to preserve the city’s historical assets through creative programs, and (2) to apply a placemaking approach based on a heptahelix collaboration (community, academia, business, media, government, users, and advocates) to foster a creative ecosystem in Surabaya. The methodology employed includes studies of history and the creative economy, a typological study of Creative Spaces, the application of a placemaking approach, and the application of the superimposition design method. This design concept is expected to integrate the former N.V. Braat area into Surabaya’s 2025–2045 creative economy development roadmap as a platform for sustainable innovation.
