Abstract

The development of surf tourism in Pacitan Regency demonstrates significant potential, yet the growth of coastal tourism needs to be balanced with attention to the ecological condition of the littoral zone, which is vulnerable to human activities. This design aims to develop a coastal resort that acts as a spatial mediator between surfing activities and the marine ecosystem through an ecological architecture approach. The design method applies an analysis–synthesis process involving literature studies, secondary data, field observations, contextual analysis, and programmatic and spatial analysis. Based on a comparative site analysis, Mbresah Beach was selected due to its surfing potential, ecological conditions, topographic characteristics, and land capacity. The resulting design develops a low-density resort that follows the natural contours of the site through a clustered–dispersed massing strategy and a gradual zoning hierarchy from public to private areas. The relationship between users and the coastal environment is strengthened through indoor–outdoor living, semi-open spaces, visual connectivity to the sea, ecological education programs, and the use of local and natural materials. The ecological approach is further supported by the integration of an artificial reef as a design strategy that connects tourism activities with marine habitat enhancement. Thus, the resort is designed not merely as an accommodation and surfing facility, but as a spatial system that integrates human activities, coastal characteristics, and marine ecosystems.
